The club competes in the Lower Mainland Water Polo League and games may take place at ‘home’ pools in Coquitlam or at other venues around the Metro Vancouver region, once a week. The primary season runs each year from September to December, with a secondary season and/or training session in the January to April period.
The fall season culminates in a series of Lower Mainland League championship tournaments. Those tournaments, one for each age group on consecutive weekends, may mark the only time players are segregated by ability – there may be A-level and B-level competitions in which players are divided by swimming ability and skill, but fair play rules continue to apply on each team.
Coquitlam Lions employ a nationally certified head coach as well as an assistant head coach who determine the overall direction of the Coquitlam Lions program, according to the club’s fair-play philosophy. We believe it’s important to note that our head coach is a public school teacher who works primarily with our youngest age groups – his enthusiasm and experience at working with energetic youngsters who are new to the sport is one of our greatest assets.
The club also employs its older players to serve as assistant coaches. Through this coaching model, our older players learn leadership skills as well as the value of preparation and lesson planning, and an understanding of the value of providing positive reinforcement and encouragement to young athletes. Our player-coaches also serve as role models for players on younger teams.
